The former president’s link to the case was that he would have given US$500,000 to Darío Messer, one of the leaders of the case, to finance his stay in the country while he was a fugitive from Brazilian justice.
In yesterday’s action, about 50 federal police officers carried out 11 search warrants in homes and businesses located in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
The objective is to deepen the investigations on people who maintain or have maintained assets and resources abroad that have not been declared to the competent Brazilian authorities.
BENITEZ
Víctor Raúl Benítez, an analyst of international political issues, explains that this operation is subsequent to the “Patrón” operation.
“In Portuguese this means ‘we are going to continue eating yesterday’s food’. Some 17 people were investigated for currency evasion, money laundering, criminal organization and gang organization. Cartes was later removed from the case. What is happening now is that they are seizing another 11 more people who have some relationship with the people investigated in the first operation, ”he said.
The analyst explained a metaphor regarding this fact. He quoted the English philosopher Bertrand Russell and his short tale of the turkey. The story literally says so; “Our hero, the turkey, finds day after day that life is a delight full of congratulations, care and food from his mistress. Until he arrives on December 24. That day the farmer, instead of bringing the bowl with the seeds and worms that Mr. Turkey liked so much, she lines it directly with her hands, twists its neck, plucks it and bakes it.
The analyst brought up this short story to compare “Mr. Turkey” with Horacio Cartes. The former president has been accumulating companies over the months. However, he can come to the end of the year holidays and lose everything. Benítez brings up this fact, because “Bone burial” is a saying in Brazil that represents the act of eating the turkey on December 24, the next day.
STANDARD OPERATIVE
In 2019, former President Horacio Cartes was linked to an investigation that emerged from the Lava Jato case. The operation was called “Pattern”.
The process initiated in Brazil against Horacio Cartes referred to the US$ 500,000 that the businessman Darío Messer would have received from the former Paraguayan president, with the aim of escaping from justice.
In May 2019, the Supreme Court of Justice of Brazil decided to confirm the definitive habeas corpus granted to the former president and determined his freedom in the framework of the case. However, last year, the Brazilian Public Ministry appealed the ruling that has yet to be defined.
