MIAMI, United States. — The Athens 2004 Olympic champion and former world champion in various categories, both amateur and professional, Yuriorkis Gamboa, is being held in Cuba after running over a pedestrian on December 31 in the province of Santiago.
As reported The New Heraldthe accident would have occurred in a low-light area, so Gamboa would not have noticed the presence of the pedestrian on the road.
The Miami newspaper specifies that the fighter is already receiving legal help to find a way out of the situation.
“Steps are already being taken to help Gamboa, although there are still many details to be clarified. One thing that we do want to make clear is that Gamboa was not under the influence of alcohol or any other illegal substance. Gamboa is a very religious person and does not consume alcohol or anything improper, ”he assured The New Herald a source close to the situation.
Despite having left Cuba in the 2000s to start in the world of professionalism, Gamboa has lived almost permanently in his native province of Guantanamo for several years, and only travels to the United States to do the training bases for his fights.
The 41-year-old boxer has not fought since April 16, 2022 when he fell by knockout in the fifth round against Mexican Isaac Cruz.
Between January and October 2022, the Cuban authorities registered a total of 8,187 traffic accidents on the island, which caused the death of 566 people and injuries to another 6,175.
In this sense, the accident rate indicators in the country at the end of October showed an increasing trend in relation to the years 2019, 2020 and 2021.
