“The talkative was going to happen but my brothers who were there — in León — people from the Mayor’s Office ran them out of the park and started taking pictures of them,” said Melania Rojas, who said that the only thing she wanted as a family was to thank the college town people for the support.
Four years of not seeing Calixto
Rojas’ family assured this media outlet that the announcer left Nicaragua on October 17, 2018, but they had communication by telephone.
In addition, Melania Rojas affirmed that on May 1 at 12 noon she managed to communicate with her brother, who told her that he would soon cross the Rio Grande. “Sister, don’t write to me anymore, my brother told me, because he would already cross the river, but it was at six in the afternoon that we were informed of the tragic news,” explained the relative.
Rojas traveled from Belize to Mexico on April 29 irregularly with the aim of crossing into the United States and thus provide a better life for his three children who live in Nicaragua. Three days later, on May 1, it was learned through social networks that the Nicaraguan migrant drowned while trying to cross the Rio Grande.
The last minutes of his life were recorded by an American journalist. According to versions of witnesses who witnessed the moment he drowned, the Mexican authorities and rescuers who were in the area did nothing in the face of the Nicaraguan’s cries for help and desperation.
