Bishops of Bolivia: Repression against the Church in Nicaragua is an “attack on freedom of expression and religion”

The Episcopal Conference of Bolivia expressed its support, closeness and solidarity with the Catholic Church of Nicaragua and, in particular, Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, bishop of the Diocese of Matagalpa, after the persecution and siege by the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

«Happy you, when because of me they insult you, persecute you and raise all kinds of slander against you. Rejoice and show yourselves happy, because the reward you will receive in heaven will be great”, quoted the Conference in its statement, taking up the biblical text of Saint Matthew 5:11-12.

The statement indicates that the bishops of Bolivia are following closely and “with deep pain the situation that the Church and the Nicaraguan people are suffering due to the persecution they suffer from their political authorities.”

He added that the latest events in Nicaragua “such as the closure of Catholic radio stations, the forced entry into the Infant Jesus Chapel of Prague, the verbal attacks on the Church for wanting to seek a peaceful solution to the crisis that his country has been experiencing since in 2018, the persecution and siege of priests and Monsignor Rolando Álvarez and the expulsion of the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity of Mother Teresa of Calcutta they are clearly an attack on freedom of expression and religious freedom».

In addition, they encouraged the religious leaders of Nicaragua not to give up “in the effort to build a dialogue that is capable of achieving unity and peace in this Nicaraguan land.”

“You have our prayers for you, for the people you serve and for the political authorities. May the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, patron saint of Nicaragua, accompany you and intercede for you in this difficult historical moment you are experiencing,” they concluded.

After the “war” declared by Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo against the Catholic Church in Nicaragua, solidarity with the religious and especially with Monsignor Rolando Álvarez has not been long in coming. On Sunday, July 7, the Archdiocese of Managua expressed its closeness to Álvarez in the face of the dictatorship’s siege.

Since August 4, Monsignor Rolando Álvarez has been locked up in the Curia of Matagalpa, along with five priests and six lay people. The dictatorship points to the religious of “attacking peace”, for which it denies him the exit.
