A few days ago, the government submitted to Parliament the Rendering of Accounts and Balance of Budget Execution in which it states that of the 225 million dollars increased in social spending, 45 million dollars will go to education, 27 million to security, 26 million for the development of science and technology and 70 million for salary increases for public employees.

In this sense, the senator from the Front, Mario Bergara, questioned that the government “not only does not include a single peso for the University of the Republic, but also cuts its income without foreseeing how it will be solved.”

“As a result of this, its real budget will fall 7.6% at the end of the period,” warned the parliamentarian.

He said that the government saved in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic by cutting salaries and liabilities, increasing taxes and fees, shielded by the strong state that the Broad Front has built to get ahead. “It is time to pour those ‘savings’ into the well-being of Uruguayan men and women.”

Bergara stressed that in this Accountability, the FA proposes “increases for UDELAR in support of students, teachers and researchers.”

“The University, which protected us in difficult times like the pandemic, does not deserve this treatment by the government,” the legislator said.
