Audits of more than 300 state-owned companies begin in Cuba

The audits to 305 state companies from various sectors of the Cuban economy, especially linked to the food productiontourism, import and export, began this Monday throughout the country as part of the XIV National Verification of Internal Control, according to official media.

The main objective of checking the performance of these entities, some with losses and others with excess profits, is to “evaluate compliance with the 43 measures approved for the Business systemas the main actor in the creation of goods and services”, refers a office of the Cuban News Agency (ACN).

According to the publication, some 277 entities among which they will be audited are of national subordination and belong to the ministries of the AgricultureFood Industry, Tourism, Industries, Transport, Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, Construction, Energy and Mines and Health.

The usual evaluation and control exercise will be carried out in 51.2% of the nation’s municipalities and will be carried out on Superior Organizations of Business Management (OSDE), companies and base business units.

According to the Comptroller General of the Republic of Cuba, aspects such as compliance with plans, quality, payment systems, excess and distribution of profits will be reviewed; control of fuel, means of transport and other resources; economic contracts; accounts receivable and payable and the status of accounting records, among others.

In addition, the follow-up to the 63 measures approved by the government to transform Cuban agriculture is also part of the evaluation.

Gladys Bejerano, Comptroller General of the Republic, highlighted “the importance that the workers of the selected entities know the objectives and results of the exercise, the measures and recommendations that are proposed to solve the deficiencies”, as well as that “above all they understand their educational and preventive sense in terms of compliance with established laws and regulations”, points out the ACN.

Some 2,150 people, including auditors and supervisors, are expected to participate in the control exercise. Specialists from various branches and 870 university students from careers such as Accounting, Law, Industrial Engineering, Short Cycle in Auditing, Economics, Computer Science, Agricultural Sciences, Agronomy, Chemistry and Journalism will also participate.

The lack of efficiency and lack of control in the state business system have been for years among the great problems of the Cuban economy, currently immersed in a deep crisis, aggravated by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the sanctions imposed by the White House and the ineffectiveness of measures taken by the country’s authorities to overcome the complex situation.

Even though new spaces have been opened for the private sector and more than 5,000 MSMEs and non-agricultural cooperatives have been authorized in the last year, the Cuban government continues to defend the state company as the main actor in the island’s economy.
