The image of Sagittarius A* is the black hole located at the center of our galaxy, in the Milky Way, and for the first time it has been seen in an image.
It is the first visual evidence of the existence of this compact, supermassive object, made possible by the joint work of an international team of researchers called the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration.
To search for the object, eight radio telescopes were used, spread over different parts of the globe. From the captured images, which would simulate a super telescope the size of Earth, and the juxtaposition of the records, an image of the Milky Way’s black hole was arrived at.
The announcement is currently being made by the European Southern Observatory – ESO.
