The Vice President of the Republic and President of the Senate, Beatriz Argimón, returned to Uruguay after a long tour of Ukraine and Russia accompanying legislators from the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and assures that the objectives of the trip were met.
Interviewed by UnderlinedArgimón assured that what surprised her the most is that kyiv is a city that is “absolutely conditioned for defense, there are few people and also one feels the obvious tension of the moment.”
“But there was one aspect that struck me because of what Parliament means for those of us who are members, seeing a Parliament prepared for defense,” he added.
Apart from speaking with Ukrainian and Russian parliamentarians, he also spoke with a priest, according to what he told the media: “In one of the cities we were received by a priest together with part of the people who gathered to start working for the reconstruction of their city and the back of the parish was very strong, which suffered bombing, where they themselves decided to put the bodies of their neighbors.
“From that point of view it was in both parliaments a job that could be carried out. It seems unthinkable that in the 21st century we continue to face wars, possibilities of escalation of conflicts”, he added.
