Argentina: tourists will be able to sell up to US$5,000 at the financial exchange rate

The Argentine government confirmed after the meeting of the economic cabinet that tourists from abroad will be able to access the financial exchange rate to sell their dollars while access to foreign currency for the payment of imports will be speeded up.

Tourists will be able to resort to exchange houses and authorized entities to sell their dollars in an attempt to get a more favorable price than the official exchange rate, although below the blue, but in a formal way. The maximum allowed by this mechanism will be up to US$5,000 per person.

The reference exchange rate will be the one arising from operations in the financial market, which responds to the dollar of the electronic payment market (MEP) that allows you to acquire foreign currency freely through the purchase and sale of a bond that is quoted in both pesos and dollars in Argentina. It can be accessed by presenting the identification documentation used to enter the country, the Ministry of Economy of that country reported today.

Before the announcement, the MEP dollar rose 7.7% this Thursday and was trading at 327 Argentine pesos for sale, 11 pesos below the blue that does not find a ceiling (338 Argentine pesos for sale).

On the other hand, in the face of warnings from various productive sectors, at the Cabinet meeting it was agreed to “improve the conditions of access to the exchange market” for the payment of imports of inputs for strategic sectors and thus guarantee the continuity of different productive processes.

In this way, the Central Bank will allow the payment of supplies in transit, which were shipped at origin until June 27, 2022, and which have already arrived in the country with SIMI valid until that date.

The meeting held at the Palacio de Hacienda was led by the Minister of Economy Silvina Batakis together with the Minister of Labor, Claudio Moroni; the Legal and Technical Secretary of the Presidency, Vilma Ibarra; the president of the Central Bank, Miguel Pesce and the head of the Federal Administration of Public Revenue, Mercedes Marcó del Pont.

On the other hand, the president of the Bank of the Argentine Nation, Eduardo Hecker; the head of the National Securities Commission, Sebastián Negri; and the chief of staff of the Ministry of Productive Development, Camila Cabral.

After the meeting of the Economic team, Batakis received the Chief of Staff Juan Manzur at the Ministry, who crossed accompanied by three governors: Gildo Insfrán from Formosa, Sergio Zilotto from La Pampa and Omar Perotti, from Santa Fe, in the raid of the minister to secure federal support for the measures.
