In the midst of the diplomatic dispute that is maintained for the sovereignty of the islands FalklandsArgentina filed a strong protest against the United Kingdom for sending Kosovar security forces to the islands.
The Foreign Ministry summoned Ambassador Kirsty Hayes to inform her of the Argentine Government’s rejection of a new introduction of military acts in Falklandsafter it became known on December 1 that seven members of the Security Forces (KBS) would be sent to the territory.
According to British media, the troops would be sent to Falklands in the framework of “a peace support operation in accordance with an agreement signed with the United Kingdom regarding the incorporation of KBS personnel into the British infantry army in Falklands“.
In this context, the Argentine Foreign Ministry summoned Ambassador Hays on the afternoon of Tuesday, December 6, to express her firm rejection of these operations.
For his part, the Secretary of FalklandsAntarctica and South Atlantic, Guillermo Carmona, and the Undersecretary of Foreign Policy, Claudio Rozencwaig, stated that “the military initiative carried out by the United Kingdom constitutes an unwarranted show of force”.
And they added that said maneuver constitutes “a deliberate departure from the calls of numerous resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly and other international forums that urge both Argentina and the United Kingdom to resume negotiations, in order to find a solution peaceful and definitive to the sovereignty dispute that involves both countries”.
Additionally, they stated that the initiative “specifically contravenes resolution 31/49 of the United Nations General Assembly, which urges both parties (Argentina and the United Kingdom) to refrain from adopting unilateral decisions that entail the introduction of modifications in the situation while the Islands are going through the negotiation process recommended by the same Assembly”.
The Falklands sovereignty dispute is recognized by the United Nations
In their statement, the officials reaffirmed: “Once again, Argentine sovereignty over the Islands FalklandsSouth Georgia, the South Sandwich and the surrounding maritime spaces, which are an integral part of the national territory of the Argentine Republic and are illegally occupied by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”.
And they stressed that the islands “are the subject of a sovereignty dispute recognized by the United Nations through Resolution 2065 and subsequent ones of the General Assembly, as well as other international organizations and forumsand reiterated the willingness of the Argentine Government to resume negotiations to resolve the dispute peacefully”.
