Boca Juniors was consecrated on Sunday champion of an Argentine League that ends on Tuesday and that this Monday will define a qualifier for the Copa Libertadores and two for the South American.
The Xeneize celebrated on the last day after drawing 2-2 with Independiente and thanks to the fact that River Plate, their fiercest rival, beat Racing Club 1-2, which came second.
Argentina has six places for the Libertadores 2023: one reserved for the Argentine League champion, another for the Argentine Cup champion, and four for the teams that scored the most points in the year taking into account the League Cup and the Argentine League, not counting the champion of this last tournament. Boca Juniors qualified this Sunday by becoming champion of the Argentine League, with 52 points.
Racing Club reached 80 points in 2022, followed by Boca Juniors with 79, River Plate with 76 and Argentinos Juniors with 67. The Academy, the Millionaire and the Bicho thus obtained their passage to the most important club tournament on the continent for being the best located in the annual classification. Huracán currently occupies the last place in the annual ranking, with 65 units (+12 goal difference), but Tigre and Newell’s can still qualify because they have one less game. Tigre is eighth in the annual ranking with 63 units and Newell’s ninth. with 62 integers and +6 goal difference.
This Monday, the Rosario team visits Barracas Central and Tigre receives Arsenal. The last classified will be known on Sunday when the final of the Argentine Cup is played. This Wednesday the semifinals will be played: Boca Juniors-Patronato and Banfield-Talleres. If Xeneize also wins the Copa Argentina, the qualifier will be the other finalist.
Five of the six qualifiers from Argentina will play directly in the group phase and the fourth-placed team in the League (Huracán, Tigre or Newell’s) will play in the second phase. Huracán, Tigre and Newell’s settle the last place granted by the Argentine League for the Libertadores and the two pending for the South American.
The other teams that have a guaranteed place in the 2023 Copa Sudamericana due to their position in the annual ranking are Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata (65 points), Defensa y Justicia (65), Estudiantes de La Plata (61) and San Lorenzo ( 58).
All of Argentina’s qualifiers for the Copa Sudamericana will begin their participation in the group stage.
This Monday they will also meet at the close of the twenty-seventh day of the Rosario Central League and Colón.
The competition will end on Tuesday with the Platense-Lanús and Vélez-Central Córdoba matches, postponed from the nineteenth date. EFE
