The Eagles of Americadirected by the Spanish Ángel Villacampa, were proclaimed this Monday champions of the Closing 2023 after beating the Tuzas 2-1 Pachuca in the second leg of the final of the Mexican women’s soccer league. The goals for the Águilas came from Katty Martínez in the first half and from former Real Madrid player Aurelie Kaci in the second half. For Las Tuzas discounted Alice Soto on the end.
In the first leg played last Friday at the Pachuca stadium, América won 1-2. This Monday they achieved their second title in the history of the league with a total score of 4-2.
The local team was ahead from the first moment. He got his reward in the seventh minute on a serve from the left by Nicolette Hernández that Katty Martínez headed in the center of the box towards the far post to put the Águilas up 1-0. It was difficult for Pachuca to get into the game due to the problems suffered by Panamanian Marta Cox to supply balls in front of former Barça player Jennifer Hermoso and the tournament’s top scorer, Charlyn Corral.
América obtained the second goal in minute 19 in a one-on-one. Alison González faced the goalkeeper Esthefanny Barreras, but the definition of the forward went to the side of the goal. In addition to the Spanish Villacampa, the Águilas had in this match the Catalan Andrea Pereira, a central defender who played the 90 minutes, and her compatriot, the midfielder Andrea Sánchez, who remained on the bench.
Record attendance in Mexico
This is the first title won by coach Ángel Villacampa, who six months ago led his team to the final, which they lost to Tigres. For the Eagles it was the second time since 2017, the date of creation of the women’s league, that they have won the title, after a first in the 2018 Apertura.
The duel between América and Pachuca held at the Azteca Stadium set a record attendance for a women’s soccer match in Mexico, receiving 58,156 fans. The previous mark was established in the first leg of the Apertura 2022 final, in which the Águilas received Tigres UANL in front of 52,654 fans.
