More than a month after the fourth wave of Covid-19 infections began in the country, the approval of Mexicans on the performance of the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in the face of the pandemic shows a considerable reduction, compared to what has been registered in recent weeks, according to the results of the one hundred and sixth National Survey of Coronavirus in Mexico Realized by Consult Mitofsky.
58.9% of those surveyed responded that they approve of the actions of Lopez Obrador to contain the effects of coronavirus epidemic which, as of February 14, has caused the death of 312,965 people in Mexico, according to official data. The approval percentage is more than 4 percentage points below what was registered a month ago, in the exercise of this polling house published on January 16, which registered 63.4 percent of positive responses.
37.9% of the people interviewed said that they do not approve of the management of the Chief Executive in the face of the crisis that has caused the Covid-19 in the country.
In the demoscopic study carried out on the February 11 to 13 conducted by Consulta Mitofsky highlighted that eight out of 10 people knew someone who died from the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
83.6% of those surveyed said that a member of their family has been infected with the coronavirus. While 54.2 said that someone who lives in the same house has tested positive for Covid-19.
Meanwhile, six out of 10 interviewees responded that they have already been infected with this disease.
In the most recent edition of the National Survey of Coronavirus in Mexico58% of Mexicans stated that they have fear of dying from Covid-19a percentage lower than the 63% that was observed a month ago when the uptick in infections began, mainly attributed to the appearance of the coronavirus. omicron variant, which is characterized by being more contagious than the rest of the variants that have been detected so far.
A similar situation was perceived when asking about the fear of catch the coronavirus. 67.1% responded that they are “very” or “somewhat” afraid of being infected, however, it is a result 8 percentage points less than those registered in January. The accumulated number of Covid-19 infections in Mexico at the cutoff on Monday was 5 million 300,537 confirmed cases.
Despite the fact that people admitted that they are less afraid of the coronavirus and its effects, the percentage of Mexicans who think that someone close to them is infected increased considerably, rising to 73.3%, after on January 16 this percentage was 62.9 .
As for the comparison of the main fears of the population in the country, the fear of catching coronavirus (18.9%) is less than that of being the victim of a crime (31.9%) or having their economy affected (27.9 percent).
These results reflect the perception of the behavior of the pandemic in recent weeks, which, according to the Ministry of Health, shows a downward trend in the number of estimated active Covid-19 cases, that is, people who have presented symptoms of this disease in the last 14 days.
This Monday, February 14, the federal agency reported that around 91,858 active cases were estimated, the lowest figure recorded since the beginning of January, at the beginning of the fourth spike in infections.
It should be remembered that on February 8, the Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, highlighted that observed signs that the pandemic “is losing strength”.
The official explained that in the sixth epidemiological week of the year, “Covid-19 infections are on a clear downward trend.”
“We had talked about a stabilization phase, this week, the sixth of the year, we have a reduction again, there is consistency in all the parameters that indicate that the fourth wave of Covid-19 is going down, of course we must take into account that epidemics have a changing nature, but the news is positive,” said López-Gatell, during the morning conference last Tuesday at the National Palace, during the “El Pulso de la Salud” segment.
In addition, the federal government has highlighted the progress made in the strategy of vaccination against Covid-19which in recent months has focused on the application of the booster dose.
This week Mexico City began with the vaccination of this dose for persons 30 to 39 years of age in the 16 municipalities.
Among the results of the most recent Mitofsky Consultation survey, it stands out that 88% of those surveyed stated that they maintain the use of face masks “always”.
To carry out this exercise, the survey house directed by Roy Campos interviewed 1,000 Mexicans over 18 years of age with smart mobile devices with Internet access. “The results are not simple frequencies, but estimates based on the post-stratification of the sample calculated on expansion factors according to four demographic variables (population by entity, sex, age and schooling) obtained from the last public census”, he details. . This survey has a sample design.
