Lula promised to return to the state-led economic growth and social policies that helped lift millions out of poverty when he ruled Brazil from 2003 to 2010.
In addition, he promised to fight against the destruction of the Amazon rainforest and make Brazil a leader in global climate negotiations.
His victory consolidates a new “red tide” in Latin America, after the historic victories of the left in the elections in Colombia and Chile, echoing a regional political change two decades ago that brought Lula onto the world stage.
