Managua. The Nicaraguan Independent Journalists and Communicators movement (PCIN) warned of “a further deterioration” of freedoms in the country, especially freedom of expression and the right of association.
In a statement, the PCIN rejected the “arbitrary” government decision to cancel the legal status of the Association of Nicaraguan Journalists “Dr. Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Cardenal”, made up mostly of communicators critical of the government of President Daniel Ortega.
Also to the Violeta Barrios de Chamorro Foundation, dedicated to the protection and promotion of freedom of the press and expression, and which closed a year ago in order not to submit to the Foreign Agents Regulatory Law.
The outlawing of both NGOs, according to the PCIN, constitutes “a further deterioration of freedoms in Nicaragua, especially freedom of expression and the right of association.” He highlighted that the organizations have contributed to the debate of ideas by proposing critical thinking for the construction of a true rule of law.
