The president of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol), Alexander Dominguezassured this Sunday that he hopes to reverse the “debt” with women’s soccer in the region and turn it into a world “power”.

The leader said he hopes that when it is mentioned that the rival team is South American, whether it is for women’s or men’s soccer, “the opponent has to tremble.”

According to the head of Conmebol, when he assumed that position in 2016 there were a “maximum of 6,000 women registered as professional soccer players” in South America.

“Today, through the promotion that Conmebol has been doing, through club licenses where we demand that clubs have to have this approach of promoting women’s soccer, we already have more than 150,000 women registered as professional soccer players” , he highlighted.

The director highlighted as part of the commitment to women’s football the decision of Conmebol to raise, starting this year, the prize for the champion and runner-up of the Copa Libertadores.

The winning squad will receive $1.5 million and the runner-up $500,000, he confirmed.

Domínguez highlighted on his Twitter account that the agreement he signed with the president of CAF, Sergio Díaz-Granados, will allow “working together to promote the inclusion of girls and women in football, as a platform for social transformation and development in the countries member of Conmebol”.

As part of the agreement, CAF will support activities related to women’s soccer in the Under 14 and Under 16 categories of the Conmebol Development League, among other initiatives, the integration body said in a statement.

Just during the ceremony this Sunday, held in the Paraguayan city of Luque, the award ceremony was held for Club Olimpia and Club Sport Kuetuvy, who won the U14 and U16 women’s of the Development League of the Association Paraguayan Soccer (APF) and Conmebol.
