The National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture (MNP) confirmed having learned of a new case of sexual abuse, this time in the Psychiatric Hospital. The victim would be a patient who reported what happened through a note.
The NPM intervened in the case of a patient at the Psychiatric Hospital who recounted events that are part of a case of sexual abuse, which would have occurred during her various hospitalizations.
These facts were described in a note written by the victim herself within the framework of the therapy that she develops in the institution, the statement said.
Within the note, the patient refers to having witnessed acts of rape committed by a nursing staff against a hospitalized person, and also indicates that the complainant herself maintained relations with a nurse, in charge of her care.
Likewise, it states that the patients are constantly beaten by the nurses, often for no reason, and that they enter the women’s bathrooms when they are in the shower.
The reference note was delivered by the patient on May 12 to her treating psychologist, who in turn reported it to the medical director, Lilian Ovelar, and to the head of the Hospitalization Department, Carol Maggi, the following day. On May 18, the NPM became aware of what had happened.
The complaint was not formalized by the management of the Psychiatric Hospital until three hours after the Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture, through its commissioner Orlando Castillo, had communicated by telephone to reiterate the obligation to notify the Public Ministry so you can intervene.
The case is in the District Prosecutor’s Office No. 9, in charge of Prosecutor Andrea Vera, who has already ordered several proceedings.
From the NPM they reiterate the obligation of the authorities of public institutions to immediately denounce the punishable acts that come to their knowledge, facts that both in the case of the person deprived of liberty of the Casa del Buen Pastor prison and the patient of the Psychiatric Hospital They were ignored by the authorities.
