Agricultural production in Uruguay: grew 18.5% in the winter and 7% this summer

The area of ​​winter crops grew 18.5% in 2021at the same time that the area occupied by summer crops is 7% higher in relation to the one that existed last year, based both data on what was revealed by the agricultural survey Spring 2021prepared by the Directorate of Agricultural Statistics (DIEA) of the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP).

Private sector sources consulted by The Observer this Friday they agreed that the growth data in the winter area is what was estimated, but they expressed some doubt in relation to the summer area, given that they understand that the advance may even be a little higher and exceed 10%.

winter crops

The total area planted with winter crops was estimated at just over 648 thousand hectares (has), 18.5% more than in the previous harvestwhen 547 thousand hectares of winter crops for dry grain were established.

A new increase in the area planted with winter crops destined for dry grain is confirmed in the last five years, going from 419 thousand hectares in the winter of 2017 to 648 thousand hectares in the last campaign, which represents a growth of 55% in the period considered.

Wheat

The area sown with wheat increased by 9%, reaching 245 thousand hectares in this campaign, compared to 224 thousand hectares in the previous harvest.

The total production of wheat was estimated at 974 thousand tons, 4% higher than in the previous year and 121% more if we compare it with the campaign five years ago.

For its part, the average yield at the national level was estimated at 3,985 kg/ha sown, 4.7% less than that registered in the previous harvest,

when the historical maximum relieved by the DIEA of 4,181 kilos per hectare was reached.

Barley

The area planted with malting barley was estimated at 224 thousand hectares, 21% more than in the previous harvest when 185 thousand hectares were planted.

Total production was estimated at 920 thousand tons.

The yield in this campaign was estimated at 4,102 kilos per hectare sown, compared to almost 4,791 kilos per hectare of the previous harvest, which was a historical record.

Rapeseed and carinata

The area planted between rapeseed (Brassica napus) and carinata (Brassica carinata) continues to grow, exceeding 162 thousand hectares in this harvest, 42% more than in the 2020 harvestconsolidating itself in the country’s agricultural rotations.

Total production was estimated at 294 thousand tons.

Its average yield was estimated at 1,813 kg/ha, which is the historical maximum for the crop in the country.

Oatmeal

The area of ​​oats for dry grain was estimated at just over 14 thousand hectares, 32% less than in the previous harvest.

Total production was estimated at 30 thousand tons.

The average yield was 2,186 kilos per ha.

summer crops

The intention to plant summer crops for the 2021/22 harvest was estimated at 1,154,000 hectares, 7% more than in the previous harvest when 1,078,000 hectares were planted.

Accompanying the increase in the area of ​​winter crops, the area of ​​second-rate summer crops increased, highlighting second-rate soybeans, which would reach 530,000 hectares, compared to 450,000 hectares in the previous harvest.

For soybean, a sowing intention of 981 thousand hectares was estimated, 8.6% above what was sown in the previous campaign, mean value of the confidence interval of the survey (upper limit 1,076 thousand hectares, lower limit 885 thousand hectares).

The intention to sow premium soybeans was estimated at 450,000 hectares, 2.8% less than in 2020/21, and 46% of the total intention to sow the oilseed, while in the previous harvest it reached 51 %.

The intention to plant corn for dry grain was estimated at 145 thousand hectares, a value similar to that registered in the 2020/21 harvest.

The area of ​​sorghum finally destined for dry grain was estimated at 21,000 hectares, 7,000 hectares less than in the previous summer campaign.

Surface

The estimated farm area for the 2021/22 harvest was estimated at 1,206,459 hectares, 6% more than in the previous campaign when 1,138,965 hectares of agricultural farms were reached, always considering crops destined for dry grain.

40% was planted in their own fields, 483 thousand hectares, compared to 38.5% in the previous 2020/21 harvest.

In leased fields, 585,704 hectares were planted, 49% of the total farm area, a value just 1% higher than in 2020/21.

On the other hand, sharecropping farms reached 112,245 hectares.

soil management

In 2021, 648,000 hectares were planted with winter crops, 88% through direct sowing (zero tillage), while 4.3% of the area (28,000 hectares) was conventional tillage, and finally, 7.7 % of the surface (almost 50,000 hectares), superficial tillage was carried out focused on correcting the farms prior to planting.

Therefore, of the 648,000 hectares sown in winter, some earthwork was carried out on almost 80,000 hectares (12%).

In almost 90% of the summer area it was planted by sowing, 60,000 hectares were planted in farms in which 5% were conventionally tilled and finally, in almost 7% of the area, minimal tillage was done to correct the farms. , about 80 thousand hectares.
