On Wednesday, June 15, the Uruguayan Teaching Union Coordinator (CSEU) plans to hold a day of mobilization in defense of public education.
In the last hours, the deputies of the National Party Alexandra Inzaurralde, Miguel Irrazábal and Rodrigo Blás proposed to the Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado, that the day in which the general strike of education and a march will take place, the essentiality of the dining rooms be decreed schoolchildren.
In this sense, the president of the PIT-CNT, Marcelo Abdala, said that although he does not attribute intentionality to anyone, he believes that the initiative shows “an enormous hypocrisy.”
He affirmed that the trade union movement defends the food security of girls and boys throughout the year and not just one day.
Everyday of the year
“What happens when there are vacations, holidays, what happens on Sundays? I would like the bet to be doubled and for the educational system to hire more workers and to provide food for the little ones every day of the year, but these people take care of that only when there is unemployment,” Abdala questioned.
For his part, the vice president of the PIT-CNT, José Lorenzo López, assured that “there are already mechanisms established by the unions to feed children on strike days, as they have proposed on other occasions, through food tickets or trays”.
“That has already been done, the authorities know it and the education workers have proposed it and, therefore, they do not object to the search for alternatives,” he said.
