A woman murdered by her ex-partner in San Miguel del Padrón, Havana

A woman identified as Teresa was murdered on October 20 by her former partner in their home in the neighborhood of de la Virgen del Camino, in the municipality of San Miguel del Padrón, Havana. The news was confirmed by the YoSíTeCreo platform in Cuba and the magazine Tense Wings this Thursday.

“Our condolences go out to her relatives, especially her daughter, of legal age, who survives her,” the activists published in their social networks while they asked the community for more information about femicide.

At the beginning of last month, the Cuban Women’s Network registered another crime against a woman living in San Antonio de los Baños, in the province of Artemisa. The victim was 30 years old and was murdered “by a 16 or 17-year-old boy, on October 2, around 8:30 at night,” he told Radio Televisión Martí. activist Zelandia Pérez, member of the organization.

“The Government does not take this into account and we continue to wait for a law that protects women against violence.”

Pérez denounced then that, despite the increase in femicides on the island, “the Government does not take this into account and we continue to wait for a Law that protects women against violence.”

With the death of Teresa and the woman from San Antonio de los Baños, there are more than 30 victims of feminicide in Cuba so far this year. “It is a quite alarming figure. We never tire of repeating that 2020 we closed with a femicide rate of 28 (cases),” said Pérez. “It is not ensured that the laws that are dictated are complied with. We are devoid of all protection; this is simply like that, horrible!”

La Red Femenina de Cuba, the feminist magazine Tense Wings and YoSíTeCreo made a call at the beginning of last February to seek answers to the increase in femicides on the island and to demand effective state action in the face of these murders.

These associations consider that the State must recognize that there is a problem to act in these cases, they requested that the figures of victims of sexist violence be provided and the crime of femicide be classified in the future reform of the Penal Code, scheduled for 2022.
