A strong storm hit Sancti Spíritus this Monday, leaving streets and houses flooded in numerous neighborhoods. Around six in the afternoon and for an hour, hail, very strong winds, lightning and thunder struck, reported the residents of the city, who are grateful that at least “the current did not go away.”
What did happen is that the water overflowed the drainage capacity, flooding many parts of the city. On Cañada street, in the Escribano neighborhood, a child was about to be dragged away by the waters, according to the United States-based activist from Sancti Spiritus Néstor Estévez.
His brother, Alexander Fábregas Milanés, was the one who saved the minor from falling into a sinkhole. “The problem is the inlet that is in the corner, which is not visible when the water rises, but has a strong enough suction that it can drag a person,” he explained to this newspaper.
“This is not about something political or anything like that, it is about the life of a minor who was in danger. I decided to run and save his life”
Fábregas Milanés himself narrated in a direct transmission that the boy’s flip-flop had fallen off and, while he was looking for it, he was swept away by the current. The 33-year-old, who turned last year nine months in prison for calling a protest on July 11 throught social mediaHe clarified: “This is not about something political or anything like that, it is about the life of a minor who was in danger. I decided to run and save his life.”
In the same space, however, he lamented that the neighborhood has been experiencing this type of situation for several decades: “They have been holding these false meetings for more than twenty years, these people come to give a tooth, they say they are going to intubate, and there is never a budget nor is there anything, it’s for fun. Nobody really cares because those who come to give a tooth live well”.
The official press So far, it has not reported this latest storm in Sancti Spíritus nor has it given any weather forecast.
Until last month, the province was suffering from a serious situation of water shortage. Meanwhile, in Camagüey and in the eastern provinces of Granma and Santiago de Cubaheavy rains caused injuries, flooding and communication cuts.
