At the end of 1970, Varadero hosted the International Festival of Popular Song, an unprecedented musical event that had as its precedent in 1967 a similar event, but smaller, with Cuban and foreign participants. The magnitude of Varadero 70 made it an extraordinary phenomenon, not only because of the number of artists who responded to the invitation this time, but also because of the organization of the event and the participation of the people from all over the island.
The artistic delegation of Spain, one of the largest made up of artists who are very popular with the audience, reaped the laurels of the event. Almost half a century after this great musical event held in Cuba, I went to meet Luis Gardey, one of the Spanish participants in Varadero 70, who still lives in Havana.
