A Cuban court sentences the writer María Cristina Garrido to 7 years in prison

The writer María Cristina Garrido Rodríguez and her sister Angélica, who demonstrated on July 11 in San José de las Lajas (Mayabeque), have been sentenced to 7 and 3 years in prison, respectively, according to Michel Valladares Cala, husband of the first and director in Pinar del Río of the Republican Party of Cuba.

In a post on his Facebook profile, Valladares accused Gervasio Escalona Escalona, ​​whom he describes as a “henchman of the PNR” (National Revolutionary Police), “of creating the crime of attack for which his wife has been convicted. According to his testimony , the officers who testified at the trial affirmed that the writer was not in the alleged place of the events during the night of the 11th. The agent affirmed that Garrido Rodríguez, who was accused of attack, contempt, resistance, public disorder and organization to offending, hit him from behind.

María Cristina, 41, and Angélica, 39, Garrido Rodríguez were tried at the end of January and the Prosecutor’s Office had requested 15 and 10 years for them respectively.

Valladares Cala then described the process as a “circus”, in which he even assures that the prosecutors exposed the contradictions in which the police officers incurred when offering their testimonies. “They haven’t told a single truth, a pure lie, a pure contradiction between them,” says Valladares, who says, however, that the lawyers “are working well.”

In the last hours it has also transpired that the sentences of the protests in Guanajay, Artemisa, of which only the one of angel tablesentenced to 12 years in prison for attack.
