The judgment of the 3rd Criminal Court of Rio de Janeiro decided to maintain the preventive detention of two soldiers accused of killing Civil Police expert Renato Couto de Mendonça. The defenses of Sergeant Manoel Vitor Silva Soares and Corporal Daris Fidélis had requested that their arrests be revoked.
Judge Alexandre Abrahão Dias Teixeira considered, however, that there was no reason to revoke the arrest of the two Navy personnel.
The magistrate also denied the requests of Sergeant Bruno Santos de Lima and his father, Lourival Ferreira de Lima, for new diligences and to list witnesses. The judge ruled that the requirements were irrelevant.
Lourival and the three soldiers are accused of killing the expert. Renato Mendonça was shot in May of this year, after a disagreement with Lourival, owner of a junkyard located in the north of Rio de Janeiro. The victim was thrown, still alive, into a river in the Baixada Fluminense.
