UN Working Group on Enforced Disappearances arrives

The delegation visiting Uruguay at the invitation of the government will meet with state officials, the National Institute of Human Rights, family members and victims of enforced disappearance, their legal representatives, civil society organizations, and people who work on enforced disappearances. The experts will visit excavation sites and pay homage to the “Memorial in Remembrance of the Disappeared” in the Cerro de Montevideo.

The delegation, made up of human rights experts, Mr. Luciano Hazan (Chair-Rapporteur), Ms. Aua Baldé (Vice-Chair) and Ms. Gabriella Citroni, will examine matters related to the mandate of the Working Group, in particular the victims’ rights to truth, justice, and reparation in the context of enforced disappearances; efforts toward memory preservation; and measures aimed at preventing enforced disappearances.

The Working Group will present a final report with its conclusions and recommendations at the 54th session of the Human Rights Council in September 2023.
