The Union of Nicaraguan Political Prisoners and Prisoners (UPPN) and the International Human Rights Network (RIDH) carried out a report directed and prepared for the United Nations Committee Against Torture (CAT) where they point out that political prisoners are subjected to a “civil death” by the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo after regaining their freedom.
The UPPN and RIDH document is based on the interview, monitoring and collection of information from 30 former political prisoners who suffered arbitrary detention, torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and the consequences of the confinement to which they were subjected by the Nicaraguan dictatorship since 2018. .
The objective of the report is to systematize the consequences of the detention, the ways in which the Nicaraguan State and its workers continue to violate their fundamental rights, and the forced displacement that this has caused.
“The results of the report revealed several direct consequences of the imprisonment and torture suffered, including physical and psychological ailments that have not been adequately treated due to the constant state of persecution and violence towards political prisoners; which leads to a generalized “civil death” where all the victims indicate that they no longer feel complete citizens for not being able to exercise their rights”, reads the press release released by UPPN.

In the conclusions of the report, they request the United Nations Committee Against Torture to urge the State of Nicaragua to immediately stop the harassment and criminalization of the released persons and guarantee the full exercise of their civil, political, economic and social rights, including the right to health and compensation for damage caused.
In addition, those released demand “the judicial investigation and criminalization of the judges responsible for arbitrarily sentencing victims to prison in flawed judicial proceedings and for preventing the formulation of complaints in a safe manner in cases of torture.”
“We also call for the immediate unconditional release of all the 182 people who have been arbitrarily detained since 2018, to put an end to their constant violation and ill-treatment, as well as an end to the siege and persecution of all those released. », ends the document.
