The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MGAP) announced this Thursday that the entry of bone-in meat cuts will be allowed from Brazil, a country that has a “health status superior to Uruguay” for being “free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination, superior to ours,” said the minister of the portfolio, Fernando Mattos, this Thursday at a press conference.

The neighboring country has “four times more than the number of cattle that Uruguay has. In such a way that a spectrum of a supplying country is opened up in an important way”, and with this authorization it is sought to “expand the spectrum of importers” to, supposedly, lower the price paid by consumers.

In 10 days

The import permit is effective from this Friday, and the minister hopes that “In 10 days there may already be some cut in the butcher shops.”

As an additional benefit that the government hopes will happen, Uruguayan meat, which is consumed internally, would be released for export.
