The presence of stuffed animals, curtains and carpets, although they are not a source of virus transmission, are reservoirs of aeroallergens or pneumoallergens, mainly mites and dust, explained Dr. Susana Repka, head of the Allergy Unit of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the UNA – Hospital de Clínicas. She warned that in an allergic patient, these could trigger a respiratory allergy crisis.
The respiratory symptoms that aeroallergens can produce are varied. “In the nose it can present with sneezing, itching, rhinorrhea, which is runny nose, and congestion. Likewise, itching in the throat, in the eyes, redness and even tearing, while at the level of the lower airways a cough can begin and followed by screeching in the chest, ”he explained.
He commented that the first pillar of allergy treatment is education, for which the patient must know what he is allergic to. Once identified, he should try to avoid places where he could be in contact with aeroallergens.
The specialist recommends that in the case of allergies to dust mites, the person should avoid stuffed animals, curtains, rugs in the bedroom, as well as other objects that could be reservoirs. In addition, care must be taken that the walls do not have humidity, but if it is unavoidable, she advises putting the head of the bed in another place until that sector can receive an anti-humidity treatment.

Asthmatic people and in general urged to always be protected from the cold neck and feet. For asthmatics it is essential that their nose works well.
“The nose must fulfill the function of heating, humidifying and filtering the air and if that nose is already inflamed due to an upper respiratory allergy, that air that enters the lungs will be air that is not conditioned, it will be cold air. And the cold itself can cause broncho-spasms in asthmatics”, he stressed.
He added that it is very important that the patient suffering from asthma regularly attend their controls. He stressed that they must know what medication to use when a crisis occurs, in order to quickly cut through that difficult moment.
“You should also know your basic treatment, maintenance, what to do when you have a crisis, to stay deflated, that there is no contact with an aeroallergen that triggers a crisis,” he said.
