Security Minister Juan Pino held a meeting on Tuesday with General Laura Richardson, head of the United States Southern Command. This as part of a tour carried out by the US military in Panama.
The meeting, which was planned to take place in the province of Darién and in which Richardson was going to make a field visit to learn about the migratory situation on the ground, had to be held in the Panamanian capital due to bad weather.
It was known that among the issues discussed by Pino and the US general was border security.
Before, Richardson held meetings with the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, and Foreign Minister Erika Mouynes. She was also received by the administrator of the Canal Authority, Ricauter Vásquez.
Richardson’s visit to Panama concludes with a round table on women in peace and security, where she will talk with female leaders of Panama’s security establishments about the contribution of women to security in Panama and the region, according to the news agency EFE news.
Richardson, who is visiting Panama for the first time, has served as commander of the US Northern Command, as well as deputy commander of the US Army at Fort Brag, and deputy chief of staff for Communications of the Coalition Headquarters that operated during the Afghanistan war.
Laura Richardson took office on October 29, 2021, as the first woman in charge of this US Army institution that cooperates on security issues with the governments of Latin America and the Caribbean.
