Every May 30, the country celebrates the National Organ Donation Dayin commemoration of the birth of the son of the first patient who gave birth after having received a transplant in a public hospital.
In addition to this event serves to pay tribute to the thousands of lives that have been saved by receiving a transplant, the National Organ Donation Day also remember the importance of being donors.
Therefore, as part of the celebrations that will take place during National Organ Donation Dayin the City, the Obelisk will light up green to pay tribute to all the people who have been donors.
According to data provided by the Ministry of Health, so far this year, 700 organ transplants and 666 cornea transplants have been performed in the countrywhich made it possible to save or recover the lives of 700 patients who were on the waiting list.
Of the 1,366 transplants that were performed, 613 came from deceased donors and 87 from living donors, since healthy people can also help others improve their quality of life or save them from dying.
According to the National Central Single Coordinating Institute for Ablation and Implantation (Incucai), in charge of coordinating and promoting these procedures in the country, for each donor up to seven lives can be saved.
For this reason, every day it is more essential to educate and make all citizens aware of the importance of being a donor, which is why this datewell currently 7,321 people await an organ transplant.
How to be an organ donor
To become a donor, it is necessary to belong to the country’s organ and tissue registry, which is coordinated by Incucai. A certificate of authorization or registration as an organ donor is signed before the body.
