A new anniversary of the birth of Batlle y Ordóñez is celebrated, one of the most relevant political figures in the history of Uruguay, and twice President of the Republic in the periods between (1903-1907) and (1911-1915) later.
The icon of Colorado Partylaid the foundations of modern Uruguay and his figure became a political symbol, transcended party colors, merging with the other ideals of democracy throughout the national political system.
From his own ranks, he was reminded with some of his most famous quotes. “In a true democracy, the people should not be satisfied with electing their rulers, they should govern their chosen ones,” he pointed out from the Colorado Party.
For his part, the Minister of the Environment, Adrián Peña, emphasized “VIVA BATLLE”, to pay tribute to the politician.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cosse, expressed her tribute, with the honoree’s own words.

During the year 1903, he is elected as President of the Republic. With the arrival of him to the presidency of Uruguay, a process of modernization of the State begins. Various areas of the country are beginning to have superlative changes in social, economic, cultural and educational matters.
Because of this, the reforms produced received the denomination of “Batllista reforms”, marking Uruguay during a good part of the 20th century.
Indeed, Uruguay underwent a series of transformations and reforms that led to the laying of the foundations to convert it into a «social state». During this period, the country became a pioneer for the continent with laws such as: the elimination of the death penalty, divorce by the sole will of the woman, the eight-hour work day, the limitation and regulation of working day of women and children.
