Informality fell to 44.7% in the first quarter

Yesterday, the National Administrative Department of Statistics (Dane) published a series of bulletins on the country’s labor market. Among them is the informality report, which showed that for the period January-March 2022, a reduction of 3.3 percentage points in the indicator in relation to the data of the first quarter of last year.

The proportion of informality then stood at 44.7%, because of 11.16 million workers in the 23 cities and metropolitan areas measured by Dane, there are 6.16 million formal workers and 4.99 million informal workers.

In the 13 main cities, on the other hand, there was a reduction of 3.4 percentage points, as it went from 46.8% in the same quarter of 2021 to 43.4%. Most of the country’s employed (10.07 million) are concentrated in them, with 5.7 million formal and 4.37 million informal.

The cities with the highest informality rate were Sincelejo (66.8%), Cúcuta (63.8%) and Riohacha (63.0%)while the cities with the lowest proportion of informality were Bogotá (33.1%), Manizales (37.7%) and Medellín (41.9%).

By sex, in the 13 main cities the informality rate for men fell by 4.4 percentage points compared to the indicator for January – March 2021, and fell to 43.8%, while in women this was reduced in the same period only 2.1 percentage points, from 45.1% to 43.0%.

The Dane also delivered the results of the youth labor market for the first quarter. For people between 15 and 18 years old, the occupancy rate was 44% for the period, an increase of 2.5 percentage pointss, and the unemployment rate for this group stood at 21.3%, a decrease of 3.3 points compared to the January-March 2021 quarter (24.6%).

The branch of economic activity that concentrated the greatest number of employed persons in this age range in the quarter was vehicle trade and repair (19.7%)with 998,000 workers, followed by agriculture (14.6%) with 740,000 and manufacturing industries (10.7%), with 542,000 jobs occupied by young people.
