Eliseo Núñez, former liberal deputy and critic of the Daniel Ortega administration, maintains that for the legalization of marijuana in Nicaragua, a rule of law is needed and currently, the country lacks it. Therefore, the legal issue proposed by the son of the presidential couple, the sanctioned Juan Carlos Ortega Murillo, would open the door to creating “a government cartel to manage it.”
The opponent, in an interview for the team of Article 66, indicated that “in the model of the current rule of law in Nicaragua it will be impossible to guarantee adequate regulation, normally the countries that have achieved and made this issue, as a legal issue, that is, a regulated issue, regulate not only marijuana, they regulate all its derivatives.
“The question here is how ready is the country for such a regulation? It is not like alcohol, because in alcohol what they basically do is give very concentrated production licenses, while with marijuana production is well distributed, because it does not involve any process, (…) so regulation is much more difficult. I consider that in a dictatorial model the only thing that will bring that is corruption », he questioned.

Núñez pointed out that around the legalization of marijuana, there is a discussion that involves “an issue of values, customs, approaches to ethics and morality that each Nicaraguan has. Based on that, it has to be a discussion in a rule of law, in this model there is no room for a discussion of this type.
He remarked that this legal issue could go “astray, it goes the way of creating a government cartel that manages the product, which at the end of the day is a drug whether we like it or not.”
Juan Carlos Ortega Murillo, once again caused a stir in his social media before the approach on the possibility of legalizing marijuana in Nicaragua proposing that it could favor “micro and small production in the countryside and the city.”
“When will be the time for Nicaragua to begin formally discussing the feasibility (or not) of decriminalizing the production, marketing, possession and consumption of cannabis sativa and its derivatives?” Questioned the son of the Ortega Murillo, who is already part of the structure of corruption and figurehead of Sandinismo.
The liberal ex-deputy alleged that the sanctioned Ortega Murillo, by proposing the legalization of cannabis in the country, intends to “see himself popular, among a youth segment that is fighting for an opening of Nicaraguan society towards that issue and a host of other issues of individual liberties, which in Nicaragua are not up for discussion.
In addition, he assured that the son of the presidential couple, when raising this legal issue, “wants to control that business to become richer than it is.”
Eliseo Núñez reiterated that in order to discuss these types of issues, “a rule of law is needed so that people can express their opinions, because at the end of the day these are legal expressions that generate a change in the scale of values of a society and when it is going to be generated that change in the scale of values of society, citizen participation in the discussion is needed, if that is viable or not.
“These are issues that have a great impact on changing the vision of society and since they have a great impact, a model of democracy is needed to be able to propose there. In the current circumstances (in Nicaragua) the only thing that will reflect is the will of Ortega », he concluded.
