Dr. Eduardo Ortega Barría points out that only 48% of the population has the third dose, ‘this is worrying’

He specified that reinforcement is a necessary strategy. “We have a vaccine that allows us to kind of model how infection and disease evolve if we interact with the virus,” she said.

Dr. Eduardo Ortega Barría, secretary general of Senacyt and scientific researcher, elaborated on the announcement by the Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, in which he reported the application of the fourth dose in Panama.

He specified that reinforcement is a necessary strategy. “We have a vaccine that allows us to kind of model how infection and disease evolve if we interact with the virus,” she said.

He revealed that only 48% of the population has the third dose, which he considered worrying.

“We know that with the circulating variant you need the booster to protect against hospitalization and severe illness, especially for people over 50 years of age. The reason for age has to do with the fact that the most important risk factor for serious illness is it’s age,” said the doctor.

He explained that with the reinforcements we can reconstitute that immune response, and that is what has been recommended in Panama as of this Monday: give a second reinforcement four months after completing the first reinforcement.
