Customs holds a workshop on electronic commerce with more than 200 MSMEs

By virtue of the MSMEs represent 60% of retail sales on the Amazon platform, and that its commercial activities exceed 239 billion dollars, the General Directorate of Customs (DGA), held a workshop to encourage these Dominican companies to export their products using this electronic commerce route.

This activity is part of the program Export Morewith which the DGA promotes the growth of trade from the Dominican Republic to the rest of the world and consolidates the country as a Logistics Hub.

During his speech at the workshop “How to Export via Amazon”, held in the auditorium of the General Directorate of Customs (DGA), the general director of the institution, Eduardo Sanz Lovatón, highlighted the importance of these companies in the trade sector. Likewise, he specified that with this activity what is wanted is to encourage Dominican companies to export their products via this and other electronic commerce platforms, with the objective that MiPymes open the doors to doing business through the different online trading channels.

Similarly, Sanz Lovaton He highlighted as important data the great opportunities that exist in electronic commerce for Mipymes, since, only in Amazon, more than 1.9 million micro, small and medium-sized companies participate selling their products.

He also assured that Mipymes represent an important pillar in our economy and that is why the Government headed by Louis Abinader, will work to help them grow. To cite an example, the official explained that only in the 24 Hour Dispatch Program, 68% of the companies that use it are MiPymes.

The activity also has the purpose of providing all the support from Customs and other allied institutions to the Public and Private Sector, in the process of learning, training and facilities, to export their products via Amazon to any electronic commerce platform.

The head of the collecting entity said that his management will make the necessary efforts to provide them with tools that help to concretize and apply what they have learned so that they can follow in the footsteps of others who have been successful in this practice of conquering international markets through of internet commerce.

During his speech, Johannes Kelner, deputy director of Customs, said that this workshop seeks to motivate Dominican companies to export more and, in turn, urged them to use the facilities provided by the Government headed by the president, Abinader, and the DGA, to publicize its products abroad.

“Increasing exports means doing international business, generating foreign exchange, growing, generating quality jobs, adding value to our products and services as a country, and improving our economy. All this represents a milestone that we want to achieve as a management and for this reason ´Exporta Más´ exists”, added Kelner.

The workshop also included the participation of Guillermo Hersch, representative of Amazon, who detailed the opportunities that this platform has for Dominican MSMEs to be able to place their products in markets such as the United States.

Hersch explained the different business models offered by Amazon, as well as the requirements that these companies must meet both in the country of origin and destination of the products.

Luis Miura, director of the Dominican Confederation of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, INC (CODOPYME), congratulated the management carried out by the director Sanz Lovatón, both for the good work he has been doing in the country’s customs, and for the support to initiatives like this one, which promote and support the productive sectors of the country.
