Residents of La Candelaria gathered in the center of Caracas to celebrate the tradition of the “burning of Judas” that is usually done every Sunday of Holy Week.
The tradition consists of making a human-sized doll with rags and burning it, as a symbol of contempt for the betrayal of the apostle Judas Iscariot to Christ.
In Venezuela it is common that in this tradition Judas Iscariot is replaced by some other figure that represents that “betrayal” that is condemned in Catholic belief.
This year, Caracas residents chose to replace Judas with not just one, but four characters linked to Chavismo, as a symbol of peaceful civic protest to show discontent with the government.
In social media photos of the celebration of the burning of Judas were spread, with a doll made of rags with a cardboard with the face of Nicolás Maduro printed acting as the face of the doll.
Along with Maduro’s face, they also added cardboard printed with the faces of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the mayor of the Libertador municipality, Carmen Meléndez, and the Minister of Electricity, Néstor Reverol.

The writing highlights the theft of millions of dollars as an analogy to the silver coins received by Judas. Judas also inherits the “massage” of new symbols for Caracas “with a red communist star included and a pyramid dedicated to the sorcerers who brought me to power.”
This Judas, prior to its burning, also gave away the “invasions promoted by groups, the mountains of garbage, the lack of water and the massive electrical blackouts,” according to what the protesters read.
