This week in New York: Vigil for Reinaldo Arenas and Cuban artist in prison

Esta semana en Nueva York: vigilia por Reinaldo Arenas y artista cubanos en prisión

MIAMI, United States.- The Artists at Risk Connection (ARC), PEN International and Times Square Arts foundations organized an evening in favor of imprisoned Cuban artists, which will take place in Times Square, in New York City, next Thursday, April 21 at 6:00 p.m.

According to a statement from Artists at Risk Connection, the vigil will also be dedicated to remembering Reinaldo Arenas, and will include a poetry reading alongside Cuban artist Raúl Cordero’s public art installation titled THE POEM, a tower large-scale sculpture inspired by and dedicated to the Cuban writer and poet.

“It is difficult to create meaningful art for people in an era where their attention is scattered across so many media and technologies simultaneously. THE POEM seeks to stop time, reminding us that humans also have the ability to invest in one thing at a time, such as listening to ‘the secret dialogue of the trees’ (as Reinaldo Arenas poetically put it) and reading a poem, even while standing in the center of Times Square, Lamb said.

Alongside THE POEM Cordero will present text-based video works via digital billboards and free public programming on the ground with New York City’s diverse poetry community.

In addition, a series of events, poetry readings and live performances will be organized to celebrate THE POEM and local poets.

According to the statement from Artists at Risk Connection, the vigil that will take place after the ceremony will be officiated in solidarity with “artists who are subject to political persecution amid the current crackdown on creative expression by the Cuban government.”

Thursday’s evening will also feature readings by poets Jaime Manrique, Eloisa Amezcua, Melissa Lozada-Oliva and Maya Pope.
