MIAMI, United States. — The United States government condemned this Tuesday the repression of the Cuban regime against the protesters of july 11, 2021 (11J) who have been deprived of their liberty and who have received long sentences in recent months.
Brian A. Nichols, Undersecretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs of the Department of State, said that the oppression against those who demonstrated on that day has been “relentless”, a fact endorsed in the sentences of up to 30 years issued by courts on the Island.
“On 11J the Cuban regime unleashed a wave of relentless oppression against its own people. Each and every one of the voices that are raised in the face of this repression make a difference in the lives of those unjustly persecuted,” he wrote in Twitter the American official.

Nichols’ message is part of the “Prisoners for Why” campaign, promoted for several years by members of independent civil society in Cuba and which has been supported by numerous actors in the international community.
In his publication, Nichols also shared a video that reviews the situation faced by many of the citizens who demanded freedom in the streets during 11J.
“On July 11, 2021, tens of thousands of Cubans took to the streets (…) due to the repression of freedom of expression, a failed health system and poor economic management. Instead of listening to the Cuban people, the Cuban regime detained more than 1,400 of them. In an attempt to silence them, they use fake trials to unjustly imprison hundreds of Cubans,” the images read.
In this sense, the US official expressed Washington’s support for the cause of Cuba’s freedom.
“A generation of Cubans will spend much of their lives behind bars for the simple act of speaking. The United States stands with all Cubans seeking a better life and a voice in their government.”
