MIAMI, United States.- The Cubans responsible for the last public episode of animal abuse in Cuba were fined between 3,000 and 1,500 pesos, according to an Informative Note published by the Ministry of Agriculture (MINAGRI).
The event, which outraged the Cuban community inside and outside the Island, occurred last Friday, April 8, when several men lassoed a cat during a state rodeo show.
According to the note, on the morning of Saturday, April 9, the Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture (MINAGRI), through the General Directorate of the National Center for Animal Health (CENASA) and the Livestock Business Group (GEGAN), carried out the corresponding analysis with the Rodeo Team and the Organizing Committee of the International Agroindustrial and Food Fair FIAGROP 2022.
According to the text, “it was found that the event was carried out spontaneously and unforeseen by the comedians in charge of animating the activity, violating the Approved Program for the event and the Cuban Rodeo Regulations in force since the year 1997. The unfortunate event has not been part of previous shows of the Rodeo meetings at the Rancho Boyeros Fairgrounds”.
In this regard, reads the MINAGRI note, “the corresponding administrative, disciplinary and misdemeanor sanctions were applied according to the provisions of Decree-Law No. 31/2021 on Animal Welfare and its Regulations, regulations that develop the Constitution of the Republic of Cuba, regarding the duty of Cuban citizens to protect natural resources, flora and fauna and ensure the conservation of a healthy environment.
Marianela Altunga Díaz, head of the Provincial Department of Animal Health of Havana, assured that the artists involved were fined 3,000 pesos and the athletes responsible for the act were fined 1,500 pesos, in accordance with the provisions of the Article 58 of Decree 38/2021.
MINAGRI explained that, “as part of the Training and communication plan that is being developed in the country on the legal norms of Animal Welfare, awareness actions will continue to be carried out on the subject with all rodeo teams in the country through the Cuban Society of Rodeo Cowboys of the Cuban Association of Animal Production (ACPA) and the official ANIPLANT”.
