Venezuela rejects Russia's suspension from the UN Human Rights Council

Venezuela rejects the decision to suspend Russia from the Human Rights Council of the United Nations Organization (UN), since the application of this resolution deepens the attacks against multilateralism, stressed the Foreign Minister of the Republic, Félix Plasencia.

“As a founding member of the United Nations Organization, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reiterates its commitment to the principles and mandate of its Founding Charter, and rejects the decision to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council,” published the Chancellor Plasencia through his account on the social network Twitter.

The resolution was approved with the votes in favor of 93 countries, 24 against and 58 abstentions during a session held on Thursday, April 7.

Sanctions prevented Venezuela from voting

In the session, Venezuela could not vote because on January 12 it was denied its right to vote at the UN because the country has a debt with the organization.

Venezuela has not been able to pay that debt as a result of the sanctions imposed by the United States. The banks cannot process the money that the national government has arranged to catch up with the UN.

To pass, the resolution required a two-thirds majority vote.

For the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela, this resolution affects multilateralism and “brings down bridges necessary for understanding and seriously threatens security, order and global peace.”

“We condemn the application of this resolution that affects multilateralism, as well as the prospects for dialogue that our country actively promotes. This decision breaks down bridges necessary for understanding and seriously threatens security, order and global peace,” Plasencia stressed.

Likewise, he denounced “the deepening of the attacks against multilateralism, which restrict our exercise of the inalienable right to vote in the UN, through the illegal imposition of unilateral coercive measures, and affects our active contribution to peacekeeping.”

For Russia’s representative to the UN, Vasili Nebenzia, “this event is unprecedented, it will not facilitate or help what is happening between Russia and Ukraine,” he said Thursday.

“This is an attempt by the US to maintain dominance and control and continue with DD colonialism. H H. in international relations. Those who want to have independent foreign policies are being pushed to the periphery,” she added.

For his part, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the director general of the United Nations, António Guterres, stated earlier that Moscow’s expulsion from the forum would create “a dangerous precedent.”
