The presidents of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira, and of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Minister Edson Fachin, signed today (5) a cooperation agreement to combat the spread of fake news, the fake newsduring this year’s elections.
The signing took place at the official residence of the Chamber and also had the participation of the vice president of the TSE, Minister Alexandre de Moraes. In addition to the cooperation agreement, a protocol of intent was also signed for the Permanent Program to Combat Misinformation within the scope of the Electoral Justice, formed by members of the two institutions. The term is valid for 60 months.
In the document, the TSE and the Chamber emphasize that fake news can represent “a risk to goods and values essential to society, such as democracy, as well as negatively affect the legitimacy and credibility of the electoral process and the capacity of women voters and voters”. voters to exercise their right to vote in a conscious and informed manner”.
Among the measures defined in the term, are the development of actions and projects, jointly, to face disinformation in the electoral process, in addition to activities aimed at raising awareness of the illegality of disinformation practices.
It was also defined that the institutions will adopt measures to discourage and denounce the creation and use of disinformation networks and illegal conduct, as well as the mass shooting of political propaganda messages during the elections. In addition, it was also defined that the TSE and the Chamber will act “in defense of the integrity of the Electoral Process and the reliability of the electronic voting system”.
