They denounce the transfer to Caracas of key witnesses in the conflict in which indigenous people died

On March 20, an alleged discussion was recorded between members of the Yanomami ethnic group located in the border area of Bolívar state, with officials from the Parima B air base, after the latter decided to remove their internet connection.

On the afternoon of this Sunday, April 3, the coordinator of indigenous peoples for the Penal Forum, Olnar Ortiz Baredenounced the illegal transfer to Caracas of the two Yanomami who survived the events that occurred on March 20, in which four members of this ethnic group died.

From the General Páez Air Base, located in Puerto Ayacucho, the defense attorney for Sifontes Borges, 16, and Gabriel Silva, both members of this community located in Parina B, denounced that he was not notified of the transfer of their representatives to the city. from Caracas.

The witnesses would be being transferred to the Military Hospital in the city of Caracas.

On April 1, Olnar Ortiz had denounced through his social networks the intention of the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples to remove the two survivors from the entity, however, at that time, thanks to a protection measure by the Public Ministry, it was agreed that Sifontes would remain hospitalized at the José Gregorio Hernández Hospital, where he was recovering from the injuries caused during the events.

Both Sifonte Borges and Gabriel Silva are key witnesses to determine the events that occurred on March 20, when an alleged dispute over a Wi-Fi connection was the trigger for an argument in which four members of the Yanomami community were killed, three were wounded, as well as two officials from the military base.

It was learned that the indigenous community had managed to get equipment to connect to the Internet through a donation, which they agreed to install at the aviation base since they have solar panels. The connection was shared, however, everything indicates that in one of the guard shifts the deal was broken, so the inhabitants of the ethnic group decided to go to claim.

Until now, the investigation that is being carried out to determine what happened continues to be hermetic, while the representatives of various NGOs as well as of the ethnic group ask that it be investigated and responsibilities be determined.

The town of Parima is part of the mountain range that divides the basins of the Orinoco and Amazon rivers, on the border with Brazil. It is a six-week walk from the nearest town, 450 kilometers from the capital, Puerto Ayacucho, where the hospital where the wounded teenager was taken, the only one seriously, is located. Parima can only be reached by plane.
