They confirm the death of Antonio Bascuñán Valdés, professor emeritus and former Dean of Law at the U. de Chile

The Faculty of Law of the University of Chile regretted the recent death of Antonio Bascuñán Valdés, professor emeritus and former dean of the faculty.

Antonio Bascuñán was a graduate of the Faculty of Law and was sworn in as a lawyer in 1963. In 1961 he presented his thesis, entitled “The crime of dishonest abuse”, which was awarded the Pedro Ortiz Prize for the best memory in criminal law. , and published by Editorial Jurídica de Chile.

In 1965 he entered the academic career within our Faculty, where he taught the chairs of Introduction to Law, Legal Profession and Criminal Law, teaching classes until 2010. He was Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Chile between 1974 and 1976 and between 1998 and 2002. In addition, he was Director of the Department of Law Sciences and in 2016 he was distinguished as Professor Emeritus of our University. He did postgraduate studies in Italy, where he studied Criminal Law and developed a thesis on juvenile discernment.

The Dean, Pablo Ruiz Tagle, who was his assistant for more than 10 years in the Chair of Introduction to Law, highlighted that Professor Bascuñán Valdés marked many generations in the teaching of Law. “We had spoken on the phone less than a week ago and a large part of the conversation revolved around issues of our Faculty, for which he felt a deep affection, maintaining permanent interest and contact with us. In fact, last January he had participated virtually in the ceremony that granted Jorge Streeter honorary professor status, ”said the academic.

Antonio Bascuñán was also a member of the Supreme Court and was a member of the arbitral body of the Mediation and Arbitration Center of the Santiago Chamber of Commerce, and of the Chilean-American Chamber of Commerce.

“I have spoken with his son, professor of our Faculty, Antonio Bascuñán Rodríguez, to express our condolences to his entire family and inform him that we have arranged for the flag to be raised to half-staff and decreed an official university duel in his honor,” added Dean Pablo Ruiz Tagle.
