24 assaults have occurred in universities in the country so far this year, according to Open Classroom

24 incidents of insecurity have occurred in six universities in Venezuela so far this year, as announced by the NGO Open Classroom.

In a document published by this organization, it was determined that, since the covid-19 pandemic began in the country on March 13, 2020, 371 assaults have occurred in higher education centers to date.

He also specified that January 2021 was the month with the most underworld attacks. In total, 30 criminal acts were recorded in a single month.

From January 1 to March 15, there have been 17 crimes that threaten the development of teaching, two against research, three against student services and two against university dependencies. Which gives a total of 24 episodes in which the underworld has entered Venezuelan higher education institutions.

The most affected university is the Universidad de los Andes with 11 of these incidents, followed by the Universidad de Oriente with eight incidents, the Universidad Centro Occidental Lisando Alvarado with two robberies or thefts, while the Universidad Central de Venezuela and the Universidad Pedagógica Experimental Libertador accumulate one event each.

The State does not take action to put an end to crime

From Aula Abierta they assured that, from the Venezuelan State, there is no interest in carrying out actions to put an end to these acts of delinquency that have plagued the public universities of the country, and that it is added to the hundreds of problems that affect the higher education system.

The insecurity inside the study houses generates a lot of concern among university students, and it is that the occurrence of these events not only affects the venues structurally, but also the operation, “the activities of teaching, research and extension; as well as the educational process in which thousands of Venezuelan students and teachers will participate.”

“These incidents of insecurity on university campuses constitute a pattern of affectation to the educational process and, therefore, to quality education. The situation worsens especially when the State does not take measures to guarantee security,” the organization said.
