Honduras rectifies and decides to "abstain" from the investigation of abuses in Nicaragua

The government of Xiomara Castro He reported that Honduras abstained from voting on the recent United Nations (UN) resolution on Nicaragua. According to Honduras, the vote against him was due to an alleged misunderstanding that he blamed on the Nicaraguan media.

The United Nations Human Rights Council approved on Thursday, March 31, the creation of a mechanism to investigate serious human rights violations in Nicaraguawhich have occurred since April 2018, and achieve “accountability”.

The resolution “Promotion and protection of human rights in Nicaragua” that orders the creation of said mechanism was approved with the favorable vote of 20 countries, seven against and 20 abstentions. The proposal was voted against by the countries allied with Daniel Ortega: Venezuela, Russia, China, Cuba, HondurasBolivia and Eritrea.

On Friday, April 1, the Castro government rectified, through a statement, stating that “Honduras abstained from voting (…) on alleged irregularities related to this issue” in Nicaragua.

“It was a media misunderstanding with the information,” he adds, making it clear that Castro will opt for this line as part of his foreign policy.

“One of the characteristics of the foreign policy of the government of President Xiomara Castro is not intervene in the internal affairs of other states,” he says.

In statements to Radio América of Honduras, the Honduran Minister of Economic Development, Pedro Barquero, accepted that the “error” came from the officials of that country and assured that the change of vote had already taken place.

“There was a communication error, apparently a person did not understand the instruction that came from the government house, that’s why I vote that way,” he said. According to the official, measures would have been taken to avoid these “errors”.
