Will Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday after his slap in the face of Chris Rock on Oscar night and said he will accept any future sanctions imposed on him by the organization.
A spokesperson for Smith released a statement on behalf of the actor Friday afternoon.
“I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, heartbreaking and inexcusable,” Smith said in the statement.
Smith’s resignation comes two days after the academy met to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Smith for violations of the organization’s standards of conduct.
On Sunday, Smith got up from his front-row seat at the Dolby Theater and went onstage to slap Rock, who had made a joke about the appearance of Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
Rock, who was going to present the award for best documentary, refused to press charges when offered by police.
