Florida congressmen propose to create the Day of the Victims of Communism

(EFE) .- Florida legislators of Cuban origin will present a bill that seeks to declare November 7 as the Day of the Victims of Communism and will promote the study in schools of the totalitarian regimes of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela, among others.

Senator Manny Díaz Jr. and House Representative David Borrero made the announcement Sunday during a meeting with civic leaders at a museum in Hialeah honoring Brigade 2506 that participated in the failed 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion ( Cuba), who sought to overthrow Fidel Castro.

They stressed that if the bill is approved and signed by the Governor of Florida, Republican Ron DeSantis, during the next legislative session of 2022, every November 7 (which celebrates today the 104th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution) will be recognized as the Day of the Victims of Communism.

Both Republicans noted that studies consistently reveal that American high school and college students do not know the basic facts and history of communism.

Both Republicans noted that studies consistently reveal that American high school and college students do not know the basic facts and history of communism, dating back to the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution.

“As a proud son of Cuban exiles, I feel that it is my duty to educate new generations about the depraved ideology, history and legacy of communism, and to ensure that the millions who suffered are not forgotten,” said Senator Díaz.

Meanwhile, Borrero recalled that many Floridians, especially Cuban, Venezuelan and Nicaraguan exiles settled in South Florida, and their families “know first-hand the horrors of communism.”

He assured that the idea is for Florida to honor the sacrifices made by the victims of this ideology and recognize their survivors.

It also empowers students “with knowledge about the crimes committed by these totalitarian regimes in Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, China, North Korea and the Soviet Union,” he added.

The legislators indicated that they will present the bill in both houses “in honor of the more than 100 million victims of communism around the world.”

The initiative will require Florida students to receive classroom instruction that exposes them to the history of communism.
