The tankers with the leachates generated by the garbage from Quito were sent, for 10 days, to the province of Orellana.
The treatment of leachates (polluting liquid generated by garbage) from the El Inga landfill, in Quito It should be treated in the same landfill facilities, as detailed by councilors Paulina Izurieta and Oma Cevallos.
Izurieta was the one who denounced that this liquid was being transported to the Jewel of the Sachas, Orellana province. The Metropolitan Solid Waste Management Company of Quito (Emgirs) did not deny this practice, but it was detailed that the leachate was taken so that a environmental manager treat them.
LA HORA once again requested an interview with Maricruz Hernández, manager of Emgirs, but it was noted that she had closed her interview schedule. But the company shared audio statements of Hernandez, where he says he does not know how much leachate was transferred to the Amazon from Quito.
?#Serious The company contracted to “do something” with the leachate says:-14 daily tanks arrive to unload Joya de los Sachas, there is an emergency in the Quito landfill, 700 cubic meters of leachate are generated per day, and that the contract it was signed late pic.twitter.com/8BCAJ3IIkr

Why was the leachate transported?
Hernández explained that in October 2021 a contract was signed with the company Green Globe which, in a term of 820 days, must treat 182,000 cubic meters of leachate. “They had the obligation to install a treatment plant ‘in situ’, that is, within the facilities of the Sanitary landfill (El Inga)”, says Hernández.
However, the company had problems in its production. “The biological part was not working well for them and that caused the filters to become clogged and they had to stop the plant,” said Hernández.
That’s why Green Globe the company PECS was contracted, in the Amazon to treat the leachate from Quito. Hernández did not point out that they have stopped sending these liquids to the Amazon, but stopping doing so means – according to the Manager – a disservice to the city because “we are not doing anything illegal” and also because “the issue has become politicized.”
I warned about it and I continue to audit as a Territory Councilor and not a Desk Councilor. The leachates are taken to the Joya de los Sachas East, it is necessary to observe environmental management and understand responsibilities. @Ambiente_Ec @ambientequito @EMGIRSEP pic.twitter.com/O2fxXAGocL

“It is a critical situation (at the El Inga landfill). (…) We are making use of areas between buckets”, Maricruz Hernandez, manager of Emgirs
