Cuba receives more than 8,000 kg of tuna and medicines from United States organizations

(EFE) .- Cuba received this Friday a shipment of more than eight tons of canned tuna, pasta and medicines, sent by the United States solidarity organizations Code Pink, Puentes de Amor and The People’s Forum, at a time of serious shortage and shortage on the Island.

The donation will be distributed free of charge to the population of the eastern provinces, according to the Cuban government, and is in addition to other aid sent in recent months by Russia, Vietnam, Nicaragua, Bolivia and other countries.

The coordinator of the Puentes de Amor project, Carlos Lazo, told the press at the Havana International Airport that the gesture is part “of the effort of the majority of the American people who are calling for the lifting of sanctions and the US embargo against Cuba”.

Humanitarian aid is a sensitive issue for the authorities, who generally only accept shipments from related organizations and countries

The Cuban professor living in the neighboring country also said that solidarity aid was a “hand of friendship” to the people in the midst of the pandemic.

The Island’s Foreign Ministry thanked the help on Twitter and pointed out that it “shows that there is a path of solidarity, exchange and genuine support between the peoples of Cuba and the United States.”

In July, the US NGO Global Health Partners sent 1.7 million syringes to support vaccination against covid-19 in Cuba.

Humanitarian aid is a sensitive issue for the authorities, who generally only accept shipments from related organizations and countries.

Last July, the government criticized a campaign that went viral on social networks to request a humanitarian corridor in the face of the health emergency resulting from one of the worst outbreaks of the pandemic.

At that time, he alleged that the campaign responded to “media opportunism” of external interest.

Food shortages, precarious conditions in hospitals and the economic crisis aggravated in the last two years by the pandemic and US sanctions were some of the triggers for the massive anti-government protests on July 11.
