Prime Minister urges to promote the use of renewable energy sources

Manuel Marrero Cruz, Prime Minister of the Republic, at the annual work meeting of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), urged today to strengthen the use of renewable energy sources, as part of the process of transforming the energy matrix of the country.

He pointed out the need to increase awareness of the photovoltaic solar power panel contracting service developed by the Electric Union (UNE) for state and non-state companies and individuals.

He recognized the effort of the Ministry’s workers to move forward despite the complex situation of the Cuban economy caused by the tightening of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States, which directly affects production processes.

The development of science and innovation and alliances with universities are vital in these times in order to ensure the development of the nation, the premier said.

Youth play a fundamental role in transforming and perfecting the business system, said the Vice Prime Minister and Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdés Menéndez, who also chaired the meeting where the main deficiencies of the sector in 2021 were analyzed. Liván Arronte Cruz, Minister of Energy and Mines, referred to the urgency of consolidating a work system based on promoting the rational use of resources, with emphasis on energy savings.

He explained to those present the main actions carried out by the Ministry, together with other agencies, in vulnerable neighborhoods of Havana, specifically in communities of the Cerro municipality.

The Cuba Petroleum Union (Cupet) carries out actions in the recovery of refineries to maintain fuel supply, increase oil production in the country, and in 2022 plans to increase the control and sale of liquefied gas for the population.

From the UNE it transpired that they intend to achieve the maintenance and recovery of the National Electric System to reduce the effects, especially for the summer, months in which, due to weather conditions, the expenditure of greater electrical energy is traditionally reported.

At the meeting it was also learned that the Geominero-Salinero Business Group (Geominsal) is committed to fulfilling its production plans despite difficulties with transportation and the packaging deficit.

On the other hand, the Nickel Business Group plans to increase exports for this period, as its activity is one of the main sources of income for the country.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines is the body of the Central Administration of the State in charge of proposing and, once approved, directing and controlling the policies of the State and the Government in the energy, geological and mining sectors.

Currently it is one of the key activities in the development of Cuba due to the direct impact it has on the population, those present at the balance agreed, where Esteban Lazo, president of the National Assembly of People’s Power (Parliament) and the Council of State.
